The Republic [Audiobook- Book I : Part 2]
The Republic is an influential treatise of
political science by the Greek philosopher Plato, written in approxmately 390 BC. The dialogue concerns what is called philosophia peri ta anthropina (philosophy of the human things) and it encompasses the areas of economics, political sociology, political philosophy, ethics, justice and knowledge.
The political ideas are presented through a paradigm of the good city which is the ground of a manifold of historical city-states differing in grade and declining in quality from its origin. While Plato's conclusion may appear that the ideal community is ruled by philosophers, his actual intent is the education of the haughty and headstrong Glaucon, a staunch aristocratic type that may represent a threat to the continuation of
Athenian political life through his force of will. It is one of the cornerstones of Western philosophy.
